Print: Ring Road Waterfall
This museum quality, fine art print will be offered in two sizes. If you’d like a larger size, please contact me.
This painting on canvas was initially painted in 25 minutes on location at Godafoss waterfall along Ring Road in Iceland, July 4, 2025. Not only did the water color and vastness of the landscape captivate me, the story behind the name stuck with me as well.
In the year 1000 AD, Godafoss received its name, “Waterfall of the Gods”. Iceland had converted to Christianity and a local Chief threw his pagan idols into the water, symbolizing a peaceful transfer to the new religion. But, there were still threats of religious wars and tensions. One of the leaders struggled to find a solution, so it’s said he laid down under a tree and closed his eyes to think. He awoke and proclaimed, the country would be Christian, but said residents could continue practicing whatever faith they wanted. The basic principle of freedom of religion spared this country. It also struck me as the most simple, practical, even humorous diplomatic solution. And it worked. I love a fundamental, principled solution.
I finished touch ups of the painting on board a ship while sailing across the Arctic Circle.
