In this painting, I captured a serene white house that I glimpsed from our ship as we were docked in Reykjavik, Iceland. After a day of exploring the city, I looked out from the boat at dinner and saw this idyllic little building nestled on a peninsula, its white walls standing out against lush greenery and distant mountains. At first, I thought it might be part of a golf course because the landscape was so perfectly manicured, but it turned out to be a charming restaurant. The contrast of that simple white house against the vast, stunning landscape really captivated me.
I painted this piece alla prima in about four hours as we were leaving the Arctic Circle and heading toward the North Sea. It’s a moment of quiet beauty, where the simplicity of the house meets the grandeur of Iceland’s landscape, and it really stands out as a memory of that voyage.
